New residents in the Metropolitan Louisville area will find it easy to commute to employment centers or travel around the region. An efficient network of Interstate highways, freeways, and major thoroughfares combine with options for mass transit and the Louisville International Airport to meet every need. To better serve the area known as Kentuckiana, which encompasses Southern Indiana and the Louisville metropolitan area of Northern Kentucky, a new bridge system is planned and moving toward construction.

KENTUCKY MOTOR VEHICLE LICENSES
Driver License Newcomers have a 30-day grace period in which to obtain a Kentucky driver license. Written, vision, and skills testing will be required with the exception of new residents who hold a valid driver license from another state. In these cases, written and skills tests may be waived. Newcomers will find driver license offices convenient located throughout the state. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet website provides a list of offices with operating hours, services that are available, and locations by county. Vehicle Title & Registration In Kentucky , the office of the county clerk is responsible for issuing motor vehicle registrations and titles. The following items are necessary to complete the licensing of your vehicle(s) in Kentucky . If you own your car without liens, you will need a certified inspection from the sheriff's office from the county of your new residence, original out-of-state title, the original registration receipt, original current proof of insurance, proof of sales/usage/use tax paid to the previous state, and picture ID or driver license. New residents with liens will need to obtain a letter from their new county clerk's office that requests the title from the previous state (if the lending institution holds the title), or the original out-of-state title with the lien listed on it.
New residents with leased vehicles must bring their original out-of-state title and the power of attorney from the leasing company. They will also need the original proof of insurance and a statement from the leasing company on its letterhead stating the amount of sales tax that the leasing company has currently paid. If the leasing company is registering your vehicle under Kentucky's U-Drive-It program, the tax statement and the inspection will not be necessary. In all other cases, a certified inspection is required from the sheriff's office in the new county of residence. For more information or answers to questions on vehicle titling and licensing, contact the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet or your county clerk:

Kentucky Safety Regulations Kentucky's "child restraint law' requires every child under 40 inches in height to be secured in a federally approved car seat. The law is primary, which means that violators can be pulled over and ticketed without the involvement of any other violation. The state also imposes a secondary seat belt law: All persons in the vehicle must be secured by a seat belt, and passengers can be subject to fines as well as the driver. Kentucky Watercraft Registration Every motorized watercraft on Kentucky waters must be registered and licensed. To register watercraft, bring ownership proof to the same county clerk's office that handles vehicle registration and titling.
INDIANA MOTOR VEHICLE LICENSING
Driver License New Indiana residents must apply for an Indiana driver license as well as register and title all vehicles. Required documentation includes your social security number, proof of identity, and proof of Indiana residency. A legal birth certificate serves as the primary identification document and also provides proof of age when required.
Automobile Registration & Titling New residents in Indiana must title their vehicle(s) within 60 days. Bring the title document from your previous state (along with a statement from a law enforcement officer or other qualified person affirming that the VIN on the out-of-state title is the same as that of your vehicle) to a license branch in the county in which you want to reside. The vehicle must be titled in your name before it can be registered.
Other documentation includes a certificate of origin and an odometer statement. All registrants are required to provide the name of their insurance company and their policy number. Individuals who are registering a vehicle must provide their social security number. For answers to questions on driver licensing or vehicle registration, contact:
ITTndiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles 317-233-6000 www.in.gov/bmv
Indiana Safety Regulations Indiana enforces a primary "seat belt" law, which allows police offers to ticket motorists solely because the driver or passengers in the front seat are not secured in a seat belt. In Indiana, motorcycle drivers under the age of 18 and those with a motorcycle learner's permit are required by law to wear a helmet and eye protection. Child vehicle safety laws are divided into age groups. Up to the age of four years, the child must be properly secured in a child passenger restraint system in all seating positions within a moving vehicle. Children from ages 4 to 12 must be properly secured by a child passenger restraint system or a seat belt in all vehicle seating positions. It is strongly recommended all children be placed in the rear seat of the vehicle.
Indiana Watercraft Registration Every motorized watercraft principally used on the waters of Indiana must be registered unless it is legally registered in another state and has not been in Indiana for more than 60 consecutive days. Motorized sailboats must also be registered. Non-motorized sailboats do not have to pay a registration fee, but they must pay excise taxes and other appropriate fees. Jet skies and other personal watercraft are considered to be motorized watercraft for registration purposes. To register your watercraft, bring proof of ownership to your local license branch.
